CO2, diode, fiber and UV selector guide

Compare laser-source families by the work you need. Understand clear acrylic, metal marking and glass without equating watts with capability.

Begin with the job

Describe the material, finished object and what the laser must change. Engraving wood, cutting clear acrylic and marking a metal tag are different requirements. A machine attractive for one can leave another unresolved.

xTool guidance identifies blue diode and CO₂ as common wood-processing choices, CO₂ for clear acrylic, and near-infrared or fiber sources for selected metal work. These are research directions, not proof that every thickness, formulation or finish works.

Compare complete configurations

Infrared describes a wavelength region; fiber describes a source technology. Those labels do not establish equal material-removal or cutting capability. A scanning or galvo arrangement is another characteristic, not a substitute for identifying the laser source.

After identifying candidate families, compare exact configurations. Include job area, object height, attachments, fume-control requirements and restrictions. A power number alone cannot establish that a machine performs the project. Record the model, module and evidence date beside each claimed outcome.

Turn the question into a decision record.

Evidence to collect before a purchase decision
QuestionEvidenceNext action
What must it do?Named stock and explicit marking, removal or through-cutting requirement.Discard comparisons answering another process question.
What configuration is shown?Exact source, accessories and representative stock.Record differences from your proposed purchase.
What is unproven?Missing geometry, finish, setup or performance information.Keep it open until supported.

Four questions worth keeping.

  1. Which project justifies the purchase?
  2. Which secondary jobs can wait?
  3. Is the demonstrated source in the quote?
  4. What would change the shortlist?

Material identity preflight

Identify composition, coatings and process questions before choosing a laser. Unknown materials remain unresolved; excluded materials get a clear stop.

Original editorial decision framework, not a hands-on product review. Material and source-family claims refer to the linked manufacturer guidance. Scenarios are explicitly hypothetical; no prices, earnings, throughput or operating settings are predicted. Check current exact-model documentation before acting.
